A beginner’s guide to: Finding the right tone

How many Linkedin posts do you see that start off with “I’m thrilled”?

I’m beyond thrilled to share my strawberry sauce recipe has been recognised as the best!

Generative AI (GenAI) is a powerful tool that can help you create content in a wide range of languages and topics. It can write resumes, recipes, stories, and LinkedIn posts. But how good is GenAI at capturing the nuances and variations of different languages and tones? And how can you use GenAI to enhance your own content creation skills and knowledge?

A significant challenge with generative AI is its tendency to default to certain words and phrases.

ChatGPT for example, although trained on a wide array of data, it may frequently use similar language patterns, particularly when crafting specific types of content like LinkedIn posts. As a result, without specific prompts to vary its language, you may notice a repetitive vocabulary style.

For example, if you ask ChatGPT to draft a post for you to share some exciting news, chances are it will start with something like “I’m thrilled”. Similarly, if you ask it to write a cover letter for a job role profile, it will likely use words like “honed”, “passionate”, or “enthusiastic”. Whilst these are not bad words as such, they are generic and overused and they do not reflect your unique personality.

So, how can you use GenAI and make your content more original and authentic?

Here are some of our tips for ChatGPT or an equivalent GenAI tool of your choice:

  • Brainstorming: Ask ChatGPT to brainstorm some different ideas for you. For example, if you are looking for a title for an essay, describe the content of the essay and ask it to generate a number of different potential titles that you could use. Then, you can choose the one that best suits your style and purpose, or combine elements from different titles to create your own.

  • Document writing: If you are using ChatGPT to write a cover letter for a role you would like to apply for, ask it to help structure your cover letter, proof-read, or expand on a paragraph that you have written already. This way, you can keep the authentic nature of your response, while also benefiting from the suggestions and corrections that ChatGPT can help with.

  • Tone variations: Try asking ChatGPT to write your content in a different tone: academic, creative, funny, professional, etc. This can help you explore different ways of expressing your ideas and emotions, and find the tone that best matches your audience and goal.

Important reminder!! Do not forget to keep your personal information to yourself, keep it safe.  Whenever you are using an open generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT, do not post your personal information, such as your name, address, phone number, email, etc. This is because your information may be stored or accessed by others, and you may not have control over how it is used or shared.

At Strawberry Sauce we can help you and your team make the most out of GenAI safely and create bespoke GenAI solutions specific to your needs. For more information, contact us at hello@strawberrysauce.com.au
